What? You Actually Call People On Your Phone?

According to the Office of National Statistics, over 17.5 million people use their mobile phones to browse the internet. Around 45% of those using the internet use their phone. Around 6 million people used their phone to access the internet for the first time in 2011. Back in 2009, only around 8.5 million people in the UK used their phones to browse the internet.

So what is behind this trend for increasing mobile phone usage?

The Smartphone Revolution:

Smartphones have certainly impacted on these trends. Since the advent of the iPhone series in 2007, phones have become better and better and have captured the imagination of the public.

The smartphone sector grew through recession and has been extremely buoyant despite the expensive contracts and expensive premium end phones. We’ve now seen new phones come on to the market that provide superb functionality, excellent screens, and 3G connectivity at budget prices. This has driven consumers to increasingly enjoy their mobile phone browsing experience.

Network Development:

Alongside the development in the smartphone market, the mobile phone networks have increased apace. We now have 4G connectivity with theoretical speeds of 14.4MBps and 3G connectivity is able to do around a tenth of that. Therefore we can get decent connectivity through 3G and excellent connectivity through 4G. With LTE and further advancements, we are going to be looking at even faster mobile broadband- mega fast.

It Depends Where You Are:

Only around 13% of rural mobile broadband users say that they have decent 3G connectivity consistently. Compare that to mobile broadband in London where you have well over 90% of users with good 3G activity.

According to the Office of National Statistics, 38% of people now use their mobile phones to surf while outside their homes and the rest jump on Wi-Fi.

Increasing Use of Wi-Fi Hotspots:

Over 5 million people now use Wi-Fi hotspots. This is a figure that is increasing fast and the variety of options to get on Wi-Fi hotspots is increasing. BT provides Wi-Fi hotspots, Sky offers them as well. There are even special cloud based Wi-Fi networks that you can get on in public places, paying a small fee.

Social Media:

The integration of social media into our phones has certainly been a major contributor to us getting online with them. As people have browsed Facebook, many have realised the speed and capacity of their phones to do more than just phone, text, and e-mail.

In addition, people have realised the benefits of being in touch on the go, especially with services such as eBay, where time really matters. You no longer have to sit in front of your computer to stay online.

Advertising Revenue Potential:

Companies like Facebook and Twitter are looking to increase their revenues from mobile phone markets. Increasingly, they are understanding that the potential of smartphones is so great, and that revenues from mobile broadband could end up surpassing their other revenue streams. They are drastically innovating and testing to find ways to generate the maximum that they can from this new and exciting revolution in technology.

Top Tip:

If you have a decent allowance of data on your phone, you can set it up as a wireless hotspot so you can jump online on your tablet or your laptop. There are many applications that can be downloaded through IOS, Windows, and Android. It really can be very simple to make your phone a mobile modem.

Coolest Online Learning Technologies

A Weapon for Knowledge:

Many educators are taking advantage of advances in online learning technology. This includes accessing teaching activities and resources online. At the same time, it utilizes different forms of communication, multimedia tools and online assessment.

An online assessment is use to gauge what the students have learned. Additionally, it employs Classroom technologies such as interactive whiteboards and personal response systems. One of the benefits of this program is that it provides an increased chance for dialogue between teachers and students. This in turn enhances the learning experience. Choosing the right online learning technology can be a daunting task. However, there are several online learning technologies that are worth checking out.

Webcams:

The use of webcams as a learning and teaching tool is gradually increasing. It also offers teachers an effective means to enable their students to see real time events. At the same time, it brings to life far off places. These two features alone can inspire imagination and curiosity. Teachers also employ webcams to provide lessons on a wide variety of topics. This includes live music lessons and online English language courses. They can be used for collaboration between schools and video conferencing as well.

Video:

This online learning technology helps teachers reach visual learners. These pupils have a tendency to learn effectively by viewing the material rather that reading it. Teachers can gain access to a wide range of video clips using the Internet instead of VHS tapes or DVDs.

Teachers can employ messaging programs as video e-learning tools. These messaging programs include Adobe Connect and Skype. They are also used to interact with experts and guest speakers on a particular topic. At the same time, interactive games are steadily being included in many higher education and K-12 institution curriculums.

Although research on utilizing video as an online learning tool is preliminary, early research shows great results and increased retention when it is employed in a lesson. Utilizing a systematic video development approach holds a lot of promise for making video models that have a positive impact on student learning.

Audio:

Lessons on tape have been around for a long time. They have been used in classrooms around the world long before the advent of computers and video. Learning using audio has been fully implemented thanks to advancements in technology. This has allowed teachers to stream audio from the Internet. At the same time, there are many podcasts and webcasts available online for teachers and students to download.

At the same time, audio is often employed to effectively explain visuals. Examples of visual learning tools may include maps and flow charts. This is because teachers are directing data to both the visual and auditory channels to effectively distribute the mental workload. Using snippets of audio about a subject being discussed also adds authenticity to the content.

Blogging:

Many online users consider blogs to be a platform for communication. However, they have recently started to be used as an online learning tool. This allows pupils to ask questions, respond and interact with other students both outside and inside the classroom.

Students can also utilize a blog to do everything that they usually do on paper. Some of these things include answering homework questions, receiving feedback on project drafts and reflecting on reading assignments. At the same time, teachers can use them to provide feedback using comments. Other students may also utilize them to provide qualitative feedback.

Screencasting:

This is a recent trend in online learning. There are a lot of screencasting tools that are available today that provide users with numerous benefits. One benefit is the ability to share their computer screens directly from their browsers. This allows people to create videos that are available online. Viewers can stream these videos directly.

Another advantage is that it gives the presenter the capability to show their flow of thoughts and ideas rather than simply explaining them. This enables them to mimic one on one experience between the student and teacher. Mimicking this experience enables teachers to deliver complete and clear instruction.

From the learner’s point of view, it provides the capability to rewind and pause the lesson. This allows them to learn at their own pace.

How Scientists are Using the Internet?

Over time, the way to disseminate news to the masses has gone from traditional print media to broadcast stations to the Internet. For scientists and others at the forefront of the technological boom, this has come as a welcomed development, as the Internet allows for research to be done more efficiently and news and reports to be published immediately.

It is only natural then that during the social media boom 85% of scientists reported that social media had an effect on their decision-making, and 77% of life scientists found themselves participating in some form of social media. Twitter, for example, allows scientists to collect data, share resources, deliver news and build relationships within the industry. Where will the technology go from here? To start, we must first look back at the developments of social media and science reporting over time.

Take a look at this infographic to learn more about the changing landscape of science and social media.

Slow Computer? Learn How to Speed Up Your PC

Does your computer seem to be slower than normal? Has your PC crashed recently? Have you had the misfortune of experiencing the blue screen of death or a similar error?

There are a plethora of things that can cause your computer to crash or perform at an unreasonably slow level. You might have too many programs loading at startup.

The general rule is this: If you don't need it and it isn't vital to your computer, delete it. By following this rule, you will enable your computer to boot up faster and perform better.

Another thing that can cause your computer to run slower is a corrupted or bloated registry. If you have a Windows computer, then you have a registry.

The registry, like a meticulous bookkeeper, stores a record of everything you do on your computer. It keeps tabs on what programs you use on your computer, what websites you look at, what you download from the Internet. It stores all of this info on your computer’s hard drive and is notorious for producing corrupted or fragmented files.

Cleaning out your registry every now and then will help Speed up your PC.

Interesting Facts That You Didn't Know About Your Smartphone

Interesting Facts About SmartPhone
Creative Commons img source.
Smartphones are amazing devices that have greater capabilities than supercomputers used to twenty to thirty years ago. Technology moves fast and technology that once needed to be housed in a large room now fits in your pocket. The amazing features of smartphones have become commonplace however and what once amazed us now just seems commonplace. Here are six facts that you didn't know about your smartphone that you may find amazing and compelling.

Usage Amongst Smartphone Owners:

Smartphones have been growing in popularity steadily ever since they were first introduced in 2001. It is estimated that the number of smartphones in existence by 2015 will be approximately 1.5 to 2 billion. That means that there is likely to be one smartphone for every six to seven people alive, which is quite amazing. In the United States, current smartphone usage equates to 35% of adults having a smartphone. People are also spending tons of time using their smartphones. On average, people check their smartphones 150 times per day which equates to once every six to seven minutes. What are people primary using smartphones for? That depends on the country that the user is living in. Usage tends to fluctuate widely from country to country though with social media being less popular in Japan and restaurant apps being more popular in the United States.

Apps have grown in popularity in recent years as well due to improved download speeds and an increase in the number of computer programmers designing new applications. Having said that, approximately 90% of apps that are downloaded are only used ten times or less once they are downloaded. What types of apps are being used by individuals? Approximately 60% of smartphones are used to play games though health apps are also prominently featured on many cell phones with approximately 90% of smartphones having a health or fitness app on it.

Cell Phone Costs:

Those text messages that you send do not cost your cell phone provider a thing. That is because the size of text messages are small enough to be inserted in data transfers by your cell phone provider that fit neatly into the spectrum that cell phone companies rent from the government. The space a text message uses is less than the space used to set up the transmittal of information between a call tower and a phone. As a result, the cost to a provider is zero and the amount you pay is all profit to a cell phone provider. The most expensive part of a smartphone is the screen. Touchscreens have grown in complexity and sensitivity and the cost of these screens have grown in accordance with these technologies. Gorilla glass, commonly used on iPhones and other smartphones are durable and sensitive to touch and have led to new functionality for smartphones. The presence of these sensitive touchscreens have led to a decrease in popularity of other input devices for smartphones including pens, points, physical keyboards, and scroll wheels, all of which were used when smartphones were first introduced to consumers.

Conclusion:

Smartphones are continuing to revolutionize the cell phone world and have become ever more popular in recent years. While it is difficult to predict what direction smartphones will head, they are bound to become more powerful and add new functionality for users. As this occurs, expect smartphones to become even more common amongst users.

Are You Using The Internet Efficiently Time-Wise?

Are You Using The Internet Efficiently Time-Wise?
Creative Commons image source.
If you’re reading this, you’re most likely sitting on your computer and looking for things to do. A few years ago, Nielsen and the Pew Center released a graphic to show how people use the internet and for the most part, internet users spent their time viewing content. Fourty-Two percent of their time was spent viewing text, images and video. In second, came email and commerce with 36%. Finally, in third place was social networking at 22%. Now if we were talking about today, with the emergence of social media as a must-stop for most internet users, the percentage of time spent using social media has most likely gone up.

Given these numbers, some may question whether or not we’re using our time as wisely as we should be. The Internet offers people a number of things to do, and sometimes those things can actually be useful. While social media can certainly provide quality information, many of us sometimes go through a social media rabbit hole. You go on to Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest and seemingly lose track of time as you go through all of your friends’ profiles. Then you look up at the clock and realize you’ve spent hours on your computer. Wouldn’t you like to use the internet to learn a skill you’ve always wanted? Here are some of the many options out there:

Teach yourself code in 8 weeks:

While you might not be able to work for Facebook as a senior programmer, Lifehacker does show you that it’s possible to learn basic coding in as little as 8 weeks. In this particular post, the author gives the reader a step by step guide for what he did to learn Python. Google offers a free class with detailed instructions and video as well as exercises to get the basics down. From there, there are a variety of courses and guides you can use to build your very own prototype.

Teach yourself guitar without ever leaving the house:

If you have a fear of meeting with an instructor in person, but you still want to learn the guitar for your own personal endeavors, it’s possible to learn to play the guitar online. Look into live music tutors who guide you through the basics and will be there each step of the way as you improve on your instrument of choice. Even if you’re a beginner who just wants a working knowledge of playing the guitar or you’re an experienced guitarist who just wants to learn a new song, a live music tutor can help. And the best part is: all you need is a webcam and WIFI connection.

Go to Yale without paying the tuition:

If you love to learn for learning’s sake to expand your mind, Yale University offers a few free courses as part of its Open Yale Courses program. You can access these courses online through iTunes, YouTube or Yale’s website; and there are a variety of courses to choose from, including Milton, the American Novel-Post 1945, and a philosophical look on Death.

Hacking And Cracking: What's The Difference?

In the field of cyber security, there are two distinct groups of individuals, hackers and crackers. A person will ultimately be classified as either one or the other depending on their particular intentions; however there are different skill sets and subgroups typically associated with each title. To help differentiate, below is a breakdown of hackers, crackers and everything in between so you can gain a better idea of who is responsible when a cyber security breach occurs.

Hackers:

The term “hacker” typically refers to individuals who seek to fully understand how computers and network systems function in order to gain in-depth knowledge and perform a precise exploit of vulnerabilities.

These experts in computer security tend to have non-malicious intentions and thus have become colloquially known as “white hat” hackers. White hat hackers engage in ethical hacking, which consists of lawfully breaking into systems for the purpose of exposing security flaws. They either seek to improve the protection of their own security systems or they are hired by organizations to perform this service. In order to do this, the hackers will initiate assessments of the company’s security system by attempting to penetrate it. If the hacker is successful during penetration tests, they are generally responsible for reporting the issue and developing a solution to prevent the same kind of security breach from occurring maliciously in the future. Companies often hire individuals to test for these vulnerabilities instead of leaving possible holes in their security systems open to attack by malicious hackers, commonly referred to as “crackers.”

Crackers:

The title of a “cracker” has gained much controversy over the past few years in regards to its malicious connotation and the reputation these individuals have gained throughout the cyber security community.

Hackers often make the argument that crackers are less knowledgeable of computer systems and lack originality in their work, which is true to an extent. Crackers are motivated solely by personal gain and are not concerned with learning the ins and outs of computer systems as much as their counterparts. Additionally, the fact of the matter is that crackers do not need to follow ethical guidelines; they simply need to exploit the system. The primary goal of a cracker is either to obtain valuable information that will lead to personal gain or to cause mischief for organizations simply because they are capable of it. Regardless of their motives, the malicious intention of these crackers has led to them being labeled as computer criminals, or “black hat” hackers. They may choose their victims randomly or target specific organizations based on profitability and other interests, but the end goal is always for their personal gain never as an ethical profession. These crackers are often caught for their malicious acts because they are not cautious or mindful of the protections that have been put in place by a business’ white hat hackers. Businesses with secure networks will hire ethical hackers to establish a honeypot, which is essentially a trap used to detect and counteract unauthorized breaches by the black hat community.

Grey Hat Hacking:

The term “grey hat” is used as a combination of white hat and black hat because it refers to hackers that engage in both hacking and cracking. While they may break into computer systems for the purpose of making a profit, their intentions are not entirely malicious. The grey hat hacker may have to perform illegal actions in order to test a system for vulnerabilities and make the necessary improvements. A possible scenario for a grey hat hacker could be breaching the security system of a company and then notifying them of the vulnerability in hopes of receiving a payment to improve the system. These tactics are seen as questionable in the hacking community, but in the end they result in a positive outcome for the hacker and improved security measures for the involved organization.

Social Media - Great Way of Communication

Most of the people today with internet access use social media in some form or the other. It changes the way people and organizations communicate or interact with others. But despite of its popularity, most people have a very limited knowledge and understanding of the scope and utility of Social Media in its entirety. A phrase being tossed around a lot today but it can sometimes hard to answer what it is?

Social Media! it is in use today as one great way of communication, where people across the world and from various professions, races, cultures and religions meet. It allows users to share content, information, opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives or even resources, tool widely use today that foster interaction, discussion and community via the internet.

Social media can take many forms, including images, text, video, and audio. Some include blogs, podcasts, wiki, message boards and blogs. It consists of billions of people’s buzzing minds, relating and connecting to each other by just a simple tap of few keys. Like a waterhole for a thirsty brains that never dries up. While the tools of social media are easy to use, the rules of the road are not necessarily intuitive. It’s a new communications landscape out there, with tremendous opportunity but also a lot to learn, waiting to watched or visit or read or blogged.

There are tons of social media platforms these days and it may hard for some people to catch up with the ever-changing lingo, in many ways is experimental; it’s not however, completely unproven and it actually a waste of money if you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s essential to understand that it is simultaneously a great opportunity.

Social media facilitates open communication and enhance information delivery and discovery. Everyone can find new people, communicate to their loved ones all over the world and meet their friends. It allows people from the different geographical location to share and express their views and meet in a single point, or at the same time promote products globally. Many will experience the broadness of connectedness and knowledge through social media use, technological literacy, opportunity to widen business and can give attract attention to your site, product or services.

Social media has a character of its own; there is nothing that would be taken for granted or be assumed. There is no “one hat fits all” kind of a solution. In fact, there are certain aspects of social media that apply to everyone, but they can at best be termed as guidelines or best practices. Social media are a learning process. Ultimately it all boils down to understanding, gathering relevant information and then analyzing it to tweak your activity, be it online or offline.

The Emergence & Efficiency of LinkedIn

Needs of Linkedin!

Using social media to promote a website, business, cause, or group is no new feature, but many organizations have struggled with finding the right recipe of properly reaching their specific market with success. Many individuals have come up with lists upon lists of tips, tricks and strategies on how to create noticeable ROI through proper use of these popular platforms. Certainly, there are ways to become a social media savant; it has been done, but there is also something to be said about the product and/or service that is being offered…maybe the real key is not the secret recipe for posting the right things at the right time to interest groups of people, but rather using the appropriate social campaigns for what you have to offer. That being said, some may be surprised at some recent trends in the virtual world.

Facebook:

Everyone uses Facebook, plain and simple. Recently breaking through the one billion-user ceiling, it is indisputable that Facebook is the leading social media giant of the world today. People use Facebook for everything from photo sharing to business promotion, to catching up with friends and relatives; it certainly is an all-encompassing platform. The drawback to Facebook is that it has a laid-back, informal aura that makes it difficult to convert views into customers unless the product/service offered is similar to that of Facebook’s personality. Furthermore, the company must successfully be interactive with their fans, meaning that these users (who have already shown invested interest in this product) have to be able to have some sort of input, compete for recognition, or be offered giveaways in order for a Facebook campaign to create significant waves.

Twitter:

The magic behind Twitter is two-fold: first, people and companies love it because it allows them free advertising along with quick ideas, facts and opinions about their favorite topics, teams, celebrities, brands and people; second, Twitter has become so popular that they don’t even have to spend a single advertising dollar to promote themselves. Everyone promotes Twitter for Twitter. There is hardly an event, commercial, or program on television not sporting its own Twitter Handle. On a micro level, in regards to convenience and usability, Twitter is genius because a quick blurb can bring you anywhere in the “Twittersphere” where the more, in depth content is located. On a macro level, a drawback to Twitter is that it can certainly be overwhelming for a user because of the sheer volume of tweets flowing into a virtual space at any given time. A not so small example of this is the Super Bowl this past February: the game average was 4,064 tweets per second, and that isn’t even the highest on record!

Linkedin

Linked in Ranking among other Social Networks.
One of the younger Internet successes of the past few years is quickly and quietly taking more and more of the professional piece of social networks. Founded for the exact purpose of conducting business and creating professional relationships through online networking, LinkedIn has carved its own path in the realm of social media. Though they have much fewer users than Facebook, LinkedIn can still boast an impressive number of users: over 225 million. Mind you, LinkedIn isn’t aimed at anyone who feels like signing up; it is specifically targeted towards business professionals and students looking to enter into business. Furthermore, LinkedIn is now the top IPO over Facebook according to an article on phys.org. LinkedIn also had a higher success rate during their opening trades, but also recorded a much steadier momentum throughout their trading. LinkedIn not only supports personal profiles that act as online resumes, but also looking for new jobs as well as discussing major business issues. The table to the left from emarketer.com shows the unrivaled popularity among those in financial professions who use social media tools specifically for business. Lastly, LinkedIn provides a platform more appropriate for B2B companies whereas Facebook caters more to the B2C companies that need consumer interaction in order to generate revenue.

Choose Wisely:

In today’s world, which is run by technology, it is almost required for all businesses to have some sort of online presence. This could be a website, a strong social media following, or simply strong customer service through an email/newsletter system. What is important is that each entity chooses the path that is right for them; the mistake here would be trying to force a business into social media fame. Some types of products and services simply aren’t cut out for that method of exposure. This does not mean that just because your company or product may not be the next Facebook success story that it is impossible to hold a considerable share of the market. It only means that you must go about building your brand in a different manner, this is where LinkedIn rules over the others. The honed course of catering to business professionals and their needs is what helps people of all professions network, find jobs, seek input and even possibly find business partners and/or investors. LinkedIn is the businessperson’s version of Facebook and it doesn’t look to be leaving anytime soon.

IT Rumors iPhone 6 Will Be The Low-Cost Phone

IT Rumors iPhone 6 Will Be The Low-Cost Phone

Just months ago the launch of iPhone 5 around 100 countries, Apple has declared rolled-back in other section orders, apparently in reply to lower than expected require for its novel flagship of Smartphone product.

Why is this happen? This is because Apple cuts some section orders, which is not so clear. However, it will affect to the response of some users, matters related to iPhone prices, or might affect the development of short item life cycles into iPhone or iPad – that can be estimated, so that the reduction of marketing window on each launched iOS gadget.

In addition, the supply restraint said that weighed down on iPhone 5, at times on the first quarter, for the most part on the first 2 months – when several keen followers were expecting to upgrade. The steep 100 to 200 dollars price cut on Apple’s previous gadgets, like iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are also expected involved selling decisions. As Apple racked-up on implausible 26.9 million ‘iPhone sales’ during of its latest quarter or 58% add to prior year’s sales. iPhone Will Feature The Long-Rumored Fingerprint Security Scanner With iWallet Release

iPhone's Long-Rumored Fingerprint Security Scanner!

The spinning rumors about the 2013 iPhone has become very common today, many sites also expresses their own opinion some of them says that it could “iPhone 5S” and others “iPhone 6”. In this article we’re going to make our own assumptions as well that Apple will launch the revived iPhone 5S this year and releases renovated iPhone 6 in the next year.

Certainly this iPhone 6 will be featured the much projected fingerprint scanner as a next-gen security measure, apparent as a set off to the final publicity of iWallet. But the most intriguing is that one fanatical tech analyst stated that they will release the fingerprint scanner.

Ming-Chi Kuo tech analyst from KGI Securities, who has gaining good track record by predicting Product Plans of Apple issuing a new research statement outlining his Apple’s 2013 products expectations. As what Kuo expected Apple will launch the revamped iPhone 5 together with iPhone 5S in June or July of 2013, appearing very parallel to the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S carrying a number of updates that includes the A7 system-on-a-chip to make the performance of the phone better, camera upgrading that features smart LED flash and f2.0 aperture and fingerprint sensor.

As what was reported and first published by MacRumors that iPhone 6 will also features fingerprint detection? Indeed Apple is planning to install fingerprint sensor hardware on their next iPhone, most probably it was incorporated with a home button, and in order their phones make a difference from the growing competition.

And almost certainly, the fingerprint scanner would be joined with iWallet. However, if we based on the current reports and rumors there is no clear evidence that iWallet is forthcoming. In the end, it won’t be hard for us to notice that it’s approaching. If we are going to lessen the imaginative kernel of this rumor down to the critical talking points, it almost certainly the break down should be like this – Kuo assumed that, no matter what Apple product will be releases this year in the way of iPhone, it’s going to be just a renovated version.

Talking about fingerprint scanning or iWallet, I believe these technologies are still an attribute of 2014’s iPhone6.

What did we do with ourselves before we had the Internet? Even among people who were adults by the time the Internet became commonplace in most homes have trouble remembering what it was like when not remembering the actor who starred in a particular movie simply meant carrying on in ignorance rather than grabbing a smartphone or laptop to clear up the debate. These days, many of us are wired to the Internet almost full-time. We take the World Wide Web with us to work, to school, on buses, in cars and even in the bathroom and to bed.

Where are people spending all of that time though, and what are they doing? People aren't just writing emails; they're buying things and downloading books, music and movies. They're connecting with friends and families on social networks and sharing photos from vacations. They're job-hunting, looking for something to cook for dinner and settling that argument about what year that one television show debuted.

To complicate matters further, where people go breaks down along lines of culture and nationality. Even within the United States, different age groups and people with different interests within those age groups all inhabit different corners of the Internet. Outside the United States, the diversity is much wider. As large and popular as a site like Facebook is worldwide, countries with large populations like Russia and China have thriving social networks of their own.

In other words, the "World" part of World Wide Web is becoming more accurate than ever as access to the Internet becomes more and more common not just in Tokyo and London, New York and Rio de Janerio but in places like Accra and Kathmandu. And it's not just urban centers; access is making its way into more and more remote areas.

So, where are people hanging out online? And how does that break down among different countries? Who likes to shop, who likes to connect with others, who likes to consume media and where is it all being done?

where are people hanging out online? How Do We Spend Time Online?

Finding The Perfect Computer To Fit Your Needs

If you are thinking about buying a new computer, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the wide selection of brands and models available these days. If you truly want to make an informed decision about your next computer, there are some technical specifications and terms you will need to learn and understand so that you will be able to properly assess the needs you have and choose the computer that fits most of those needs at a price you can afford. This article will help you figure out what characteristics should be considered when you are computer shopping.

Your Computer Needs:

First, consider how you will use your new computer. If you only perform basic tasks like surfing the internet, using Microsoft Office programs, or play simple games like Solitaire, you will not need to buy a fancy, expensive computer. The most basic and cheapest computers will be able to handle these tasks just fine. However, if you are a gamer who loves playing high resolution computer games, there are high performance and gaming computers available. Gaming computers come with beefier CPUs, extra RAM and lots of hard drive space to install games on.

Other tasks, such as video and music editing, will also require a high performance computer with plenty of hard drive space and RAM. If you plan to use your computer for entertainment activities such as watching movies and TV, then you will want to consider buying a computer that is designed and marketed as an entertainment or media computer. You will also want a computer that has a large screen, good sound, a high end video card and other features that will improve the quality of the media you plan to enjoy. For gaming and watching movies, make sure your computer comes with dedicated video/graphics and sound cards for the best results.

Desktop or Laptop?

Once you have pinpointed the needs you have, decide whether you would like to have a desktop or laptop computer. It makes sense that people who are constantly on the go will want to purchase a laptop for easy portability. If you only need to use your computer while at home, then a desktop computer will be more suitable. On average, desktop computers are cheaper than their laptop counterparts. A $500 desktop computer will usually come with more features than a $500 laptop.

Technical Specifications:

As far as technical specifications, even the most basic computers these days come with at least 3GB of RAM, or memory. If you plan to just browse the internet, run basic programs and occasionally play lower resolution games, this will be enough RAM for your needs. Gamers, movie lovers, and people who run complex programs will require more RAM. Find the computer that has the highest amount of RAM within your budget. You can also choose to buy extra RAM separately and install it into your computer if it does not come with enough to suit your needs. It’s fairly simple to install RAM or find someone to install it for you.

The next important component is the CPU, which is also known as the processor. A computer with at least a dual core CPU will suit basic to moderate users. Gaming and high performance computers tend to have quad core CPUs. Choose a computer with a CPU that offers the highest GHz and cache memory you can find in your budget.

For those who used to do things the old way and have had the same job for many years, you may be shocked to find that newspaper ads are no longer commonly used to find job positions. The internet era is now in full force and you will need to adapt to these new technologies if you are interested in obtaining a good job nowadays. There are several different ways that technology is integrated into job searches and using these new technology forms is an essential part of finding a job.

Do More Than Visiting A Job Website:

As noted above, newspaper ads are no longer commonly used to locate job positions. While there are job listings sites online which are used and serve the same purpose, these sites are only part of the puzzle associated with getting a good job. In addition to simply browsing a job site, you will have to integrate other forms of technology to improve the chances of finding a job. One way to do so is to save a job search into some of these websites. When new positions are added to the site that fit the criteria that you are searching for, you will be contacted regarding these job positions. You can even set your smartphone to provide you with alerts when these new job postings are available through emails or other feeds. This will allow you to be a quick responder to new job postings and can thereby improve the possibility that you will be selected to be interviewed for the position.

There are brilliant apps that can make your job search much more efficient. Have a look at these apps in our previous article: 5 Must Have Mobile Apps for Job Seekers!

Do Not Down-play The Power of Social Media:

Companies that are looking for new employees often will perform a search on all job applicants. Having a presence on social media is commonly used as a way to cross-reference your credentials and to allow you to demonstrate to a potential employer your qualifications beyond what may be included on your resume or job application. While certain social media websites are designated for business, you should make sure that you have a positive presence on several different sites in order to aide a human resource manager in finding out additional information regarding who you are. Getting involved in writing articles on these sites and taking part in groups in a positive manner will also show your expertise to potential employers and may lead to job opportunities. This is true even if you are not currently looking for a job. Having a strong social media presence expands your reputation and web presence which may lead to your landing the right job for you.

Consider an Online CV/ Portfolio Blog:

Another way to use technology to help you land the right job position is through the creation of a blog that demonstrates your knowledge and passion for the industry and career that you are pursuing. If you can turn your blog into a resource center you will be able to convert this usage of technology into possible future job opportunities. By integrating your passions and your profession, you may not even need to search for a new job. The new job may come to you through interested employers.

4 Ways Technology Could Save Lives

4 Ways Technology Could Save Lives

For those who can afford to have the best technology science has to offer, you are in for a treat as we go through some of the most innovative features available for us today. You will even see that some technologies are even overlooked or unheard of. We know some of the obvious types of technologies available, but did you know that some of these advancements can even save your life?

1.) Solar Charger

The whole point of having solar energy is that you can charge it anywhere sun is available. You don’t need to sit still or have to be in a specific place to take advantage of solar power, it's just simple - use the sun. At times solar chargers can get pricey, but when you are stranded and your GPS doesn't work, you will wish you dropped the extra cash for a solar charger. Solar Chargers work very effectively by converting the sun's rays into 12V electricity. You might not think you need it, but we will talk when you are at the top of your mountain and your phone is dead and unable to Instagram it.

2.) Technical Clothing

What? How can clothing be technical? It's so simple! Well it is. Scientists actually invented many of the materials used in outdoor clothing. I’m not sure why it's called technical clothing, but it is. In all simplicity it's based on a concept that if you layer more on you with in clothing (not just putting on 4 shirts) you will be safer from harsher weather conditions. You will find that most outdoor enthusiasts spend hundreds of dollars on technical clothing. The very effective but still expensive brand Patagonia offers plenty of options tailored for enthusiasts that are wanting to have extra safety as they go on a hike, climb, or a long trek with a bike.

3.) GPS

We tend to not think about what gps is doing exactly. When we are in a large city, we don’t really think about how cool it is and how easy it makes search engines do things for us. When we really need it to work, we are always in a place we are unfamiliar with. With the advancements of technology today, it's possible to be completely lost and with the use of GPS systems, we are able to get routed back on our way to where we want.

4.) Smart Homes

Most of the time we always worry about how we are doing when we're away from our home and only worry about the safety of our own (which is actually very important). We also need to take into consideration that our homes are in danger as well. Burglars take advantage of homeowners that are away from their homes for long periods of time. They even take note of when you leave the house. Think about this - You spend about 20 minutes outside your home packing everything for a huge getaway, and criminals take note of all that. There is a security systems company that allows you to arm your home from miles away and essentially protecting your home from criminals.

Using these type of technologies wont make criminals stop being criminals or stop you for sure from getting in dangerous situations, but it does have the potential to arm you with the appropriate devices to respond in the right way.

Pros And Cons Of IPhones
Img. Credit: freedigitalphotos
There is a great deal of buzz in the smart phone arena as of late. With the HTC Droid DNA and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy4 giving iPhone a run for its money. With the new kids on the block many are wondering where iPhone stands in what it provides. This article will not be a comparison review, mainly because the iPhone will probably appeal to a different kind of person that the Android operated phones. This will be more of a pro and con evaluation of the iPhone 5.

Pros

For the past 6+ years the iPhone has established itself as the ultimate in smartphones. The iPhone almost made the Blackberry obsolete. What makes the iPhone a constant, even with the challenge of the up and comers, is its dependability. The IOS system through which the iPhone operates is the easiest one of the most dependable on the market. It allows for easy interface navigation and system storage. With the iPhone, most every function is a touch or a swipe away. The S model also allows for ultimate voice management of the phone.

Because the iPhone is the most popular phone on the market there are numerous applications for almost any service and company you can imagine. You can do your banking, shopping, and numerous other tasks through applications without ever going directly to your web-browser. The applications are designed to store all of the user’s information, so that the user does not have enter that information on each visit, exposing their personal information.

The iPhone also allows for easy music and video downloads through the Apple Store. The Apple Store provides a secure place to locate and download your favorite songs and movies. You can also integrate you iPhone with your iTunes application which will help you manage your applications as well as allow you to store all of your music and movie files. iTunes also allows you to sync all of your information to the iCloud for safe keeping.

One of the most powerful pros to owning an iPhone is the access to Apples’ exceptional customer care. Apple is widely recognized as an industry leader in customer service and customer satisfaction.

Cons

When it comes to the cons to owning an iPhone, there would be very few, but they are worth mentioning.

One of the things that makes this phone special can also be a hang up for some users. The fact that you have to go the through the iPhone store to download anything can be a little annoying. Even if you find an application that you want on the web, you will have to go through the iStore to purchase and download it.

Another con is the inability to personalize the phone at any extensive level. There are no aftermarket themes that will allow you to make your iPhone your own.

Though the phone has improved in the area of durability it is still the most damaged smartphone on the market.

In short, the iPhone is dependable and predictable. It does not provide the frills of some of the up and comers, but it has a track record of being trustworthy.

Why Computers Recycling In Areas Should Be Done

Why Computers Recycling In Areas Should Be Done

The reality today is that electronic wastage is becoming rampant. With the rising number of products being manufactured, you can also expect a boom in the products that accumulate as trash once they are out of trend. Computers recycling or healthy computing are being promoted heavily because people have to act now before everything is too late.

Citizens do represent something, whether it is an idea or a belief. However, it seems that environmental responsibilities are hard to commit to for some whose hearts are not in the campaign itself. With something as basic as reducing, reusing and recycling, others fail to meet these demands thus they fail to see how it will impact the world.

The thing about gadgets is that they can easily become obsolete when updates are continually introduced to the market. When units are left to rot and they pile up in landfills, they do not really go away on their own. This wastage should be avoided by the consumers themselves.

Recommended for YouWhy Recycling Your Old Laptop Is Important?

On the end of the consumers, they become too curious enough that they buy without thinking twice about the rest of the things that they have. If there is an infectious trend in buying gadgets, do not give in. You are not only acknowledging the passing fancy, you are also contributing to the amount of waste that could cause serious problems.

Although gadgets are very innovative and useful nowadays, still, you can settle with what you currently have. It is not as important just because you want to maintain this certain status level. You have to be mindful of the depleting resources, the landfills being filled to the brim and the toxicity that some materials release to the environment.

Quite frankly, the improper disposal of electronic waste is very dangerous to humans and to the environment. Moreover, the wastage itself is quite a shame because the redeeming factor is hard to come by given its complexity. What could have been a space for more useful waste is now taken up by the said devices.

The thing about buying too many things given a short span of time is that you can easily neglect what you have. As a result, you also manage to pile these unused items on top of one another as they become one big mound of trash. What is even worse is if majority of the pile are electronic gadgets and devices that can be recycled instead.

Utilization is an advantageous activity that can be used as an initiative to maintain sustainable development. Gadget users must be educated that there are toxic components with those little machines that run their unit. If ready to be disposed, experts need to take out any harmful component to ensure that further disposal will already be safe.

Computers recycling are not just about handling your electronic gadgets. The bigger issue is about knowing how to time your purchases and weighing the necessity of each. If you learn to become a responsible buyer, then eventually, you can contribute to the wellness of the environment.
