The Cost of Maintaining Internet Safety

In today's quickly-moving business world, there are a great many potential threats to a growing company. A lot of these have come about in part because of the rise of the Internet. There are more and more reported instances of Internet crime each day. To help you get an idea of the scope of the problem, let's take a look at the states where Internet crime is reported with the greatest frequency. California takes the top spot, with 34,169 complaints reported in 2011. Florida takes second place with 20,034. It's fairly obvious that this is a growing threat.

In order to protect your data and your company's profitability, it's important to know how to protect your data, to know your rights, and to know how to avoid hefty fines. In order to combat the rising threat of Internet crime, the Communication Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) now requires telecommunications providers and equipment manufacturers to provide surveillance capabilities in their products so that federal agencies have the ability to monitor Internet and phone activity as well as VoIP traffic. It's a partnership that is taking great strides toward fighting the rise of Internet crime.

What does this mean for your business? In short, you need to ensure that your company is CALEA Compliant. The fines for ignoring this responsibility are hefty, often reaching up to $10,000 per day. The total consequences of failing to comply with CALEA standards can be as high as half a million dollars for a single breach of protocol. This is something worth taking very seriously, and hammers home the idea that everybody who participates in the Internet has a certain set of responsibilities to the greater community.

USB Flash Drives and the Digital Age

Professional photographers today are faced with two choices when it comes to digital storage – DVDs or USB flash drives. Clients want to know that the storage device you use will keep their pictures safe and secure, and they also want a device that gives them easy access to those pictures. Given these considerations, USB flash drives are the better option every time. On paper, DVDs might look like the better choice – they can hold about 100 pictures more than a flash drive, and they are certainly less expensive. However, it takes a lot longer to upload large blocks of information to a DVD and DVDs are more vulnerable to damage. Conversely, flash drives allow for a quicker upload of information, safer portability, and they are compatible with all kinds of devices, from smartphones to tablets. And in our digitally connected world, clients truly appreciate the convenience of being able to upload photographs instantly to their social media sites!

NSA: Best Mobile Phone Trackers Around

During 2005 the NSA began its warrantless wiretap program to look into international emails and calls. It’s come a long way from being an organization that was created to spy on foreign agencies. No one would have predicted that it would one day be deploying mobile phone trackers against citizens of the United States. The NSA folks are so skilled that they even cracked the Blackberry code! Blackberry has boasted of the most secure system around, and even they couldn’t fight the NSA off. Companies like Verizon are routinely handed over customer data to the NSA. Do you think the NSA is going a bit too far?

What is a DDoS Attack?

A DDoS attack is designed to compromise the integrity of a website, allowing hackers to gain access to sensitive material such as banking, financial, and personal information. DDoS attacks are orchestrated by hackers who rely on vast networks of computer botnets which simultaneously attack a website. These attacks are hard to identify simply because of the sheer volume of information that passes through a website on any given day. Botnets mingle in with those information streams and keep attacking the website until they make a breach in its defenses. Most times a DDoS attack is not even recognized until it is too late to stop it. Often, the first sign of a DDoS attack is a slowdown in website speed and functionality, and by then the damage will already have been done. DDoS attacks are a serious problem that can cost companies millions of dollars and devastate a business’ customer base. However, with the help of a professional DDoS protection company, it is possible to guard your online business from such vicious attacks.

Mobile Technology's Swift Rise

Over the years, mobile technology's swift rise has made quite a splash on the world. From the clunkier mobile phones that date back to the 1980s up to today's Apple iPhone and Samsung's famed Galaxy line, no other technology has spread as quickly on a worldwide scale to saturate the market to such an extent. The statistics don't lie, and mobile technology has risen to epic proportions over the years. It is worth exploring it in detail.

At this point in time, there are an overwhelming 6.8 billion cell phone subscriptions across the world. This has been a huge and consistent climb since the earliest days of cell phones. Generally speaking, the first mobile phone devices can be traced back to 1918, when these items were used in German military trains. The German Reichsbahn and mail service in 1926 then offered mobile phones to train passengers riding first class. By 1931, there was a children's book composed by Erich Kastner, who included a future utopia with mobile phones in its description. In the 1940s, in large United States cities, mobile phones were available in luxury cars. In 1961, Soviet engineer Leonid Kupryanovich introduced a handheld mobile phone. Motorola, a well known company today, produced its first mobile phones in 1973. Five years later, in 1978, 1G service began. By the 1990s, 2G service was begun and took off in a huge way. In 2001, 3G service got its start, and then by 2009, 4G service began.

For every 100 people on earth, there are now 96 cell subscriptions. Mobile saturation by continent can be measured in subscriptions per every 100 residents. There are 63 cell subscriptions for every 100 residents of Africa, the continent with the least of these subscriptions and 170 throughout North America. Surprisingly, the rural poor from the developing world are leading the charge in terms of individuals who are signing up for new cell phone subscriptions. More of these people are using mobile broadband as well. In fact, 20 percent of the saturation of mobile broadband in the developing world reside in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Asia Pacific area.

One quarter of mobile phone users now do their online shopping from their phones. One fifth of these users rely on their mobile phones with which to do their shopping in general. Mobile payments increased from $105.9 billion in 2011 to $171.5 billion in 2012. The mobile companies are thriving as they are reaping the rewards, which include millions of new cell subscriptions on a daily basis.

How To Make Best Use Of Social Media

We live in the 21st century when our lives are more and more defined by an online presence. Whether it be a Facebook account in which you share every little bit of information about your life or whether you need to update your daily activities every minute by posting on Twitter, social media is an integral part of our lives. As a company, this huge online world, is an area that can be exploited and used to improve your business in many different ways.

A study of the average age distribution across social networks would make interesting reading for any business as you can plot where to market your product and whether it is worth it. If, for example, you only sell hearing aids and your best customers are the elderly, then maybe social networks wouldn’t be useful for your business as the study shows only 3% of users on social networks are over 65. But if a recruitment company is looking at finding someone between the working ages of 17 and 65 then you can market to a whopping 81% of all Facebook users and amongst the millions, get your perfect candidate.

How Gaming Consoles Have Changed Over Time

The very first gaming console was originally created in produced in 1967. It was called Brown Fox, and was not competed with until the Magnavox Odyssey was released in 1972. However, gaming for all individuals around the world did not become as popular until 1976, when the very first Atari Pong system was released. Once Atari created virtual pong that could be played with a friend, the video gaming market began to skyrocket and has not been the same since.

In 1985, Nintendo released its very first Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) to the public. To date, Nintendo has sold more than 61.9 million copies of the system itself, with a price of $199 at launch in 1985. Following in Nintendo's footsteps was Sega Enterprises, who released the Sega Master System in June of 1986. Although the Sega Master System never quite sold as many systems as the Nintendo Entertainment System, it sold more than 15 million units worldwide since its launch with a starting price of $200. In 1988, Nintendo released a Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) which was based on the 16-bit Super Famicon system. With the system included new Mode 7 graphics and the system ultimately sold more than 49.1 million units at a launch price of $199.

Although the first-edition of Sega was never truly as successful as Nintendo itself, it continued to develop multiple systems that would make an impact in the future of the gaming community. In 1990, Sega Saturn was released by Sega Enterprises with a launch price of $399. The new system sold more than 170,000 units in Japan alone on its first day of launch. Sega Saturn was known to make gaming history as it also featured online multiplayer games including Bomberman and Duke Nukem 3D.

The original Sony Playstation was released by the Sony Computer Entertainment company in 1994 with a launch price of $299. The Sony Playstation made way for developments of both the Playstation 2 and 3 as well as the Xbox system.

Nintendo 64 was launched in June of 1996 with a launch price of $199. Another system that made headlines included the Sega Dreamcast, launched in 1998 with a price tag of $199. The Playstation 2 was then released in 2000 with a price tag originally of $299 and was manufactured by the Sony Computer Entertainment company.

How to Be a Geek and Stay Healthy

If you are a geek, you know it. It's the way that you are and unlikely to change. You have probably always been a bookworm. You're good with technology and have often been called a genius by those who fumble with hooking their new stereo up or installing a new DVR for their television. This is all well and good, but your lifestyle could be putting you at risk. When you sit at a computer for extended periods of time day after day, your body could pay the price. Think about the risks.

Love Hate Computer Relationships:

While sitting at the computer is probably part of your job, you need to make sure you're doing it properly. Frequent breaks will help prevent repetitive strain injuries. Also you probably want to invest in a nice wrist rest and ergonomic keyboard and mouse to prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from rearing its ugly head. You need to make a living, but you also want to make sure you have a good quality of life.

Also, especially if you're working from home, make sure you're doing all you can to reduce glare off your monitor and keep it wiped down so that it remains smudge and dust free. If you have natural light coming into the room, try to position the monitor so that it isn't facing the window, or have blinds and curtains that can block it out while you're working, so as to reduce the glare.

Did You Just Text Me From Across The Room?

A geek is nothing without technology. If you don't have it, you crave it and even feel anxiety. Remember the last time you left your phone somewhere and that feeling you got when you realized it? You're not alone. There are actually health issues related to cellular phone technology. Of course there's the EMF gives you a tumor study that is inconclusive. However, headaches migraines and sensitivity to light are symptoms of too much exposure to EMF. For men, your reproductive system may suffer adverse effects from excessive cell phone use. Of course, there's the obsessive or compulsive message checking disorder that affects some users. You know, the people who can't seem to go 10 minutes without taking out their phone to look at it. If you're laughing right now, you just realized that's you.

Take Steps to Protect Your Health:

Just because you're a geek, that doesn't mean that you have to be unhealthy. You can take simple steps to protect yourself. When it comes to gaming or watching television, limit your time to an hour a day, or try to play more active games like with the wii fit or Xbox Kinect. If you are on the computer as part of your job, don't sit for hours at a stretch, if you can get up every fifteen minutes or so it will help keep you healthier. Breaking up your day and getting some healthy exercise and if you dare, a bit of sunlight, can actually improve your mood and keep you working and gaming happier and healthier. At the end of the day, if you feel like you might be having some trouble sleeping, make sure you've powered down your computer and that your cell phone is far enough from you not to bother you.

How to Save a Wet Cell Phone?

Chances are, you or someone you know has dropped their cell phone in water. It’s that moment when everything turns into slow motion, as your lifeline to social media, friends and family slowly succumbs to a watery death. But is there a way to rescue your cell phone once it’s taken the plunge? Keep reading and check out this infographic ,"How to Save a Wet Cell Phone".

With over 80% of the population using cell phones in the United States, it’s no surprise that many have lost a phone to water. Over 116,000 cell phones end up in the laundry each year, and over 850,000 end up in a toilet! There’s even a Facebook group dedicated to those poor souls that have lost a cell phone during a trip to the bathroom. 29% of cellphone users admit that their damage was caused by spilling a drink on them, and it’s no surprise that men are three times as likely to damage their phone via water!

Have a Look At: Saving Your Smart Phone When It Falls In The Toilet!

Once you’ve rescued your phone from the H2O, it’s time to act-and act quickly. First, turn off the device-if it’s off already, don’t turn it on! Dry it off, and take it apart-including sim cards and the battery. Don’t shake or jostle the phone too much, as this can force water into delicate parts of the device. If spray alcohol is available, spraying the inside may help disperse the water. Use a small vacuum to help suck out any water, and then immediately put the phone into a bag of rice. You can also purchase a first-aid kit from Dry-All to help save your cell phone. Whatever you do, do not put your phone in the microwave, take a hair dryer to it, or place the device on a heater.

Keylogging the FBI Way

Magic Lantern may seem something out of a science fiction movie but it is very real and operational. With the Federal Bureau of Investigation at its helm, the tool has been behind many official surveillance activities which have not, always, been legal. Our info graphic tells more about the Magic Lantern, whose history can be traced back to 2001. This was when the FBI began its work on monitoring software that could be, remotely, installed without the user’s knowledge.

With the passage of time, the rootkit became advanced enough to steal vast amount of data from the target system, helping the FBI bust several extortion syndicates and identity theft cases. Magic Lantern also has support from some of the big antivirus makers like McAfee and Norton. They have ensured that a backdoor is left open for Magic Lantern to place a Trojan in any monitoring system, protected by them.

Our info graphic has a lot more details:

The Numbers Behind Facebook

Twenty percent of all Internet page views involve the social networking site Facebook. Females log on to the site far more often than males do, and North American women between the ages of 18 and 24 are the most active Facebook demographic of all, accounting for approximately five percent of all Facebook users or roughly 25 million accounts.

North America is rapidly moving toward Facebook saturation. It's been estimated that over half of all North Americans have Facebook accounts. Europeans are not far behind them: 27.5 percent of all Europeans have Facebook accounts. Yet North Americans and Europeans together account for less than 20 percent of the world's population, leaving the remaining 80 plus percent as a potential base for client expansion. If Facebook wants to keep expanding, it will have to specifically target more populous markets in Asia and South America.

Facebook's main source of revenue is still advertising. Two of its three biggest advertisers are Zynga and Electronic Arts, the companies behind several of Facebook's most popular games. Other top advertisers include Proctor & Gamble, AT&T, American Express, Microsoft, Groupon and Walmart.

What Drives Facebook Participation?

Facebook participation is mainly driven by gender and the demand for recreation.

Women on Facebook:

One of the typical female Facebook user's favorite activities is uploading photographs on to the website. Females upload and are tagged in well over twice ads many photographs as males. In an average year, women upload 347 photos while men only upload 179. The average female Facebook user is tagged in 73 photos while the average male Facebook user is only tagged in 35.

Games on Facebook:

Facebook offers services through which its account holders can buy virtual goods for games and to give as gifts to other users. In 2012, 27 million Facebook users bought virtual goods through the social networking site for a total expenditure of $810 million. All but five million of that amount was spent on virtual goods used in Facebook's most popular games.

Facebook's most active game programmer is Zynga with four out of the top ten most popular games: Cityville, Indiana Jones, Words With Friends, and Empires and Allies. Playdom (Garden of Time), Electronic Arts (The Sims), Double Down (Double Down Casino), Buffalo Studios (Bingo Blitz), Playtika (Slotomania) and Wooga (Diamond Dash) account for the other six.
